New Residence

San Francisco, CA  |  New Residence  |  Designed: 2014

With a very narrow parcel, sixteen feet wide by eighty-three feet long. our office designed a three storey town home over a garden studio apartment and a street level single car garage.  Situated in an affluent neighborhood with many Gothic Revival (Victorian) town homes, this project used the prevailing style as a source for architectural interpretation.  The first level contains the more public functions in urban living, entry, parlor, kitchen, and dining, while the private uses are reserved for the upper levels.  The master bedroom suite is quite formal and accommodating for long periods and an adjacent study is located on this level for quieter activities and work.  Given the quality that we are searching for, custom casework and fine detailing enhance our efforts.  Project unbuilt.

Klein Residence

Hillsborough, CA  |  New Residence  |  Designed: 2012

Located in an affluent residential community just south of San Francisco, the house is derived from nineteenth century rural England, an historical period that is expressed in other houses nearby.  While not consciously repeating an historical style, our approach is to use it as a point of departure and to interpret it while meeting our client’s needs and aspirations.  The site is flat and rectilinear with the long southwestern boundary abutting Hillsborough Boulevard, a primary suburban artery infrequently traveled by non-residents. Project unbuilt.

House on Seadrift Road

Stinson Beach, CA  |  New Residence  |  Designed: 2012

Located in a gated residential development just north of San Francisco, the house, pool and pool deck, and guest quarters look to the scale of its neighbors while importing local architectural vernacular in a design for an active family of four.  Large spaces are created for luxurious living and site elements are used to respond to the beach climate of the San Francisco Bay Area.  Social gatherings are accommodated at several positions on site and a sloped glass canopy connecting the main house with the carriage house contain the absolute latest in photo-voltaic technology.  Project unbuilt.

Harms Residence

San Francisco, CA  |  Remodel  |  Completed in 2003

With a recent purchase of this Victorian (Gothic Revival) bungalow, our client wanted to remodel to more accurately fit their needs. The rear yard carriage house would be occupied by their daughter during college while the bungalow would accommodate weekend visits and other short stays away from their home in neighboring Marin county. The rear yard addition makes room for a country kitchen while the remaining spaces have been reorganized to contain a new library, a master bedroom suite, a remodeled dining room with anteroom, a remodeled living room, and entrance foyer. The existing garage below was enlarged to accommodate two cars and a substantial structural upgrade makes the original primary frame more resistant to a seismic event.

House on Footbridge Beach

Oguinquit, ME  |  New Residence  |  Designed: 1997

A new custom residence situated in a southern Maine beachfront community, the design points to the American shingle style that emerged in the mid-nineteenth century.  Organized on three levels, interior functions take advantage of prevailing ocean views to the northeast and southeast while a dramatic three storey volume is used for the living room that is disposed adjacent to a rear yard patio.  Project unbuilt.

Habitat for Humanity

San Ramon, CA  |  New Residence  |  Designed: 1994

The new low income house of a contemporary suburban style designed for a young family of four is organized on a donated site and is directly accessible from a paved parking lot for the First Methodist Church of San Ramon, California. By creating a hedged drive court separate from church functions, the house remains private and more directly connected to the rolling open hills of the property. Simple wood frame construction accommodates the low skilled labor used to control costs and to comply with our client’s methodology for social services. Project unbuilt.
